The European Central Bank (ECB) is seeking an experienced Translator of Spanish mother tongue for a full-time position in the Romance and Mediterranean languages Section of its Language Services Division.
The Language Services Division is responsible, inter alia, for translating the ECB’s official publications and other materials from English into the other official EU languages in close collaboration with the national central banks. The selected candidate will be responsible for translating the ECB’s official publications and other materials from English into Spanish in close collaboration with his/her fellow Translator and with the linguistic staff and other experts at the Banco de Espana.
The successful applicant will be entrusted with the following main tasks:
to translate the ECB’s texts from English into Spanish, revise such translations, edit texts drafted in Spanish, and proof-read texts destined for publication in Spanish;
to contribute to the development of the ECB’s existing database of multilingual ESCB-related terminology by researching and compiling ESCB-related terminology in Spanish and by expanding translation memories in Spanish;
to become familiar with the established working procedures of the ECB’s Language Services Division and with the SDL suite of computer-assisted translation tools used by the ECB’s Translators;
to help to establish a pool of freelance translators for Spanish;
to support the Language Services Division’s annual traineeship scheme by assisting with the selection and mentoring of Spanish mother-tongue trainee translators.
The selected candidate will be required to perform occasional weekend work in accordance with the production schedules of the ECB's publications.
Qualifications and experience
Applicants must have the following knowledge and competencies:
A Master’s university degree, preferably in translation or in modern European languages, is required. A complementary post-graduate qualification in financial and/or economic translation, or in European studies, would be a distinct advantage.
At least five full years’ proven professional experience as a Translator working out of English into Spanish, preferably in the economic or financial field, is required.
A perfect command of Spanish, excellent English and a very good command of at least one other official Community language are required.
A sound background knowledge of economics and finance would be a distinct advantage.
Experience working as an in-house translator, preferably in a team, within well-defined and structured translation processes, would be a clear advantage.
Familiarity with the ECB, other EU institutions, international organisations, the Banco de Espana, and/or the financial sector would be an asset.
Excellent PC skills and a very good knowledge of standard MS Office applications are essential.
Familiarity with a terminology management package such as SDL MultiTerm and the suite of SDL translation tools would be an advantage.

understand the needs and expectations of the Division’s customers and ensure a timely response to their requests for support; take customers’ feedback into account and improve quality of service based on such feedback;
use diplomacy and tact when dealing with colleagues and customers, communicate ideas in an effective manner ensuring mutual comprehension, handle sensitive information in a discreet and confidential manner, and be aware of the impact that her/his own actions have on others. In the Unit’s wider interaction within the ESCB and in the interinstitutional context, the successful candidate will need to negotiate skilfully in situations involving both internal and external parties, and be able to find common areas of agreement in order to identify mutually acceptable solutions;
be culturally aware and have the ability to show respect for individual and cultural differences when working in a multicultural team of Translators from all EU Member States;
deliver results according to the set time frame: this will involve prioritising tasks, managing multiple assignments - tracking progress on these simultaneously - and demonstrating a conscientious attitude by paying attention to detail and ensuring that deliverables are to the required quality even when under time pressure.
Duration of contract / Closing date
Three/five-year fixed-term contract, with conversion to a contract of indefinite duration subject to individual performance and organisational needs.
